The Lion Dance is a highly spectacular and mysterious art in the Chinese cultural traditions. It combines the various elements found in dances, martial arts, the study of labyrinths and psychology. All these are then blended together to present the different movements, actions and moods of the Lion. The dance is mainly performed during celebrations or happy occasions. We also use it in parades. The soul and spirit of the Lion are provided by the Drum, Cymbals and Gong, and it is thought that the noise drives the "evil spirit" ( bad luck) away and thus makes way for good fortune, good health and good luck. Ben Ali Lions Head Unit was formed in 1958 by Past Potentate Raymond Kwong and other respected members of the Chinese community. Raymond invited Caucasians to join this prestigious Unit and learn some of the Chinese customs. This colorful fun loving Unit is one of a kind in all of Shrinedom. No other Shrine in Shrine has a Lions Head Unit. The meetings or practices are held on the Second Thursday of the Month at either the Activities Building or Kings Restaurant. Come and Join us for fun and fellowship. |
